Roots and Remedies Across Borders: Essays in Honour of Aukje van Hoek

,

Aukje van Hoek retired in 2026 after holding the Chair of Private International Law and Civil Procedure at the University of Amsterdam since 2009. To honour her, Iris van den Burg, Candida Leone, Marieke Oderkerk, Fieke van Overbeeke and Cathalijne van der Plas have edited Roots and Remedies Across Borders – Essays on Labour Law, Private International Law and Procedural Law (Liber Amicorum Aukje van Hoek).

The collection comprises 27 contributions: 16 in English and 11 in Dutch. Most address questions of private international law, with many exploring its intersection with labour law.

Hans van Loon, for example, examines circular labour migration and considers how private international law conventions might provide inspiration for its regulation, in a contribution written in Dutch. Fieke van Overbeeke discusses a pending Dutch case referred to the CJEU concerning the law applicable to international road transport workers. Uglješa Grušić explores another dimension of this intersection in his contribution, “Towards Global Private International Law of Employment”. These are just a few examples of the collection’s treatment of private international law, labour law and the relationship between the two fields.

A preview (inkijkexemplaar), including the full table of contents and Agnes Akkerman’s opening contribution, “You Never Sue Alone. The Role of Social Networks in Claiming Labour Rights”, can be downloaded from the publisher’s website, where the book is also available to purchase.
