Liber Amicorum in Honour of Ulla Liukkunen
Professor Ulla Liukkunen, a distinguished scholar of private international law, comparative law, and labour law at the
University of Helsinki, celebrated her 60th birthday on 12 September.
The collected volume Navigating Interconnected Social Justice: Liber Amicorum in Honour of Ulla Liukkunen pays tribute to Professor Liukkunen. Edited by Katja Karjalainen and Iina Tornberg and published by Springer, the volume consists of a preface, an introductory chapter drafted by the editors together with Marjo Ylhäinen, and fourteen substantive contributions.
The book illustrates the diverse challenges and legal structures shaping the contemporary world. It offers both reflective insights and in-depth scholarly analyses, bringing together contributions from leading experts as well as members of the younger generation of researchers.
The contributions resonate strongly with Professor Liukkunen’s own scholarship. Her significant contributions, particularly in the field of labour law, a field deeply intertwined with questions of social justice in their transnational and cross-border dimensions, served as an important source of inspiration for the volume.
The collection demonstrates how private international law is developed and applied in close dialogue with substantive law and with a profound understanding of comparative law. From this perspective, scholars of private international law will particularly appreciate, among others, Matteo Fornasier’s contribution, which questions territoriality as a guiding principle of labour law in contemporary transnational contexts, as well as Jaakko Husa’s literature-driven reflections on comparative law.
