IACL General Congress in Berlin: Panel on Private International Law

The next general congress of the International Academy of Comparative Law (IACL) will take place from 28 September to 2 October 2026 at the Humboldt University of Berlin.

The rich programme includes a panel devoted to private international law, scheduled for 2 October, under the title The Application of the Lex Fori: Developments in Practice and Foundations in Theory.

Chair by Pierre Mayer, the panel will be opened by a General Report (The Lex Fori When Globalization Meets Sovereigntism: Weaponizing Private International Law to Protect the Rule of Law), prepared by Massimo Benedettelli (formerly University of Bari, partner at ArbLit, Milan) on the basis of 18 national reports.

Four presentations will follow: Pascal de Vareilles-Sommières (Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University), Lex Fori and Forum Legis: Friends or Foes?; Franco Ferrari (NYU), Forumlessness versus Polycentricity: On the Relevance of the Lex Fori in Arbitration Related Proceedings; Pietro Franzina (Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, Milan), A Compass, a Dictionary, an Operating System: The Functions of the Lex Fori in Private International Law; Sébastien Besson (University of Neuchâtel), The Lex Fori in the Recognition and Enforcement of Investment Arbitration Awards; Felix M. Wilke (EBS Law School), The Application of the Lex Fori in the German Tradition and Practice.
