Join a community of more than 550 persons, established in some 70 countries, sharing an interest in private international law. While some activities of the European Association of Private International Law, such as the Association’s events, are open to anybody, only EAPIL members are permitted to launch (and lead) new projects, and contribute to the governance of the Association.
Who can apply
Membership is opened to anybody – academic or practitioner – with an expertise, or an interest, in private international law, regardless of their nationality or residence. Entities, such as research institutions and law firms, may be admitted as institutional members.
Applications for membership are examined by the Board based on the criteria for admission set out in the Statutes of the Association. The admission process can take up to four weeks to complete. New members are notified of the outcome of their application by the Secretary General.
Membership in EAPIL is automatically renewed yearly and remains in place until the member concerned decides to put an end to it, or until such time as the other grounds for termination provided for in Article 6 of the Statutes arise. Members intending to leave the Association are invited to fill in this form.
Types of membership
Ordinary membership is for natural persons with competences and experience in private international law. These are presumed in applicants who (a) hold a relevant permanent or a long-term post in an academic or research institution; (b) have earned a PhD, or equivalent degree, in private international law; (c) authored several publications in the field of private international law; or (d) have a professional experience of at least three years and have been involved as judge, arbitrator, attorney or counsel in several matters raising issues of private international law. Other applicants will be asked to elaborate on their competences and experience.
Associate membership is for natural persons with a University degree in law and an interest in private international law. Exceptionally, persons who have not yet earned a degree in law may be admitted as associate members if they show to possess competences in private international law.
Institutional membership is for legal persons and entities whose activity is related to private international law.
Associate members who meet the conditions for ordinary membership are encouraged to fill in the form available here.
