In March 2018 more than one hundred scholars from all over Europe gathered in Berlin for a conference devoted to European Private International Law, titled How European is European Private International Law? The proceedings of the conference, edited by Jan von Hein, Eva-Maria Kieninger and Giesela Rühl, have subsequently been published by Intersentia.

After two days of intensive discussion there was broad agreement that the exchange of views should continue and that a more structured approach was necessary.

The timeline below is about what happened after those first steps were taken.

    Towards the establishment of EAPIL

    A steering committee was set up in 2018 for the purpose of creating the European Association of Private International Law. The committee consisted of fourteen members (Apostolos Anthimos, Sabine Corneloup, Gilles Cuniberti, Morten M. Fogt, Pietro Franzina, Agnieszka Frackowiak-Adamska, Jan von Hein, Thomas Kadner Graziano, Eva-Maria Kieninger, Johan Meeusen, Pedro de Miguel Asensio, Dário Moura Vicente, Marta Requejo Isidro, and Giesela Rühl), and held meetings in Luxembourg (2018), Paris (2018) and Milan (2019).

  • EAPIL is officially created

    The European Association of Private International Law is created in 2019 as a non-profit organisation (association sans but lucratif) under the law of Luxembourg. December 2019 sees the launch of the EAPIL blog and the first applications for meembership.

    The first EAPIL Working Groups are established

    A Working Group on the feasibility of a comprehensive European private international law act and a Working Group on International Property Law are created in 2021, the first in a series.

  • The Young Research Network is integrated into EAPIL

    The Young research Network, established in 2019 in Würzburg, is integrated into the European Association of Private International Law as an activity of the Association.

    The EAPIL (Virtual) Seminar Series is inaugurated

    The Seminar Series of the European Association is launched in December 2021, the first topic being the impact of Brexit on private international law.

  • EAPIL holds its first general conference in Aarhus

    Originally scheduled for 2020, but postponed due to the Covid pandemic, the first general conference of EAPIL takes place in Aarhus in June 2022.

    EAPIL is granted observer status to attend a meeting of the HCCH

    The Permanent Bureau of the Hague Conference on Private International Law invites EAPIL to take part as an observer in the first meeting of the Special Commission on the practical operation of the 2007 Child Support Convention and on the 2007 Maintenance Obligations Protocol. Similar invitations have since followed in respect of other Special Commissions’ meetings.

  • EAPIL Winter School is announced

    The inaugural edition of the EAPIL Winter School is organised to take place in Como, in February 2024.

    The redesigned EAPIL website is launched

    In March 2024 the EAPIL website undergoes a comprehensive redesign, with the creation of MyEAPIL, an area reserved for members.

  • Second EAPIL conference

    The second EAPIL Conference took place in Wroclaw, organized by Agnieszka Frackowiak-Adamska.

    Launch of the EAPIL book series

    A European Association of Private International Law Series is launched, published by Edward Elgar, with the aim of publishing the outcome of the association activities, such as the proceedings of EAPIL conferences, papers based on the lectures given at the EAPIL Winter School, the results of its working groups and any other outcome of its activities worth publishing in a book format.
